HWD5

“Hope” is a message that there is always light found within the darkness. A promise that there is still good within this world.  It is a wonderfully positive message so I decided to make a simple piece with this message.

This was very simple to make and came out quite lovely.

Enjoy!

Materials Needed:
  • 12 inch scrap wood
  • Thin Rope
  • Staples
  • Staple Gun
  • Hot Glue
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • 220 Grit Sandpaper
  • 3 Paint Brushes
  • Tack Cloth
  • White Chalk Paint
  • Dark Gray Chalk Paint
  • Light Blue Chalk Paint
  • Clear Matte Finishing Spray
  • Wooden Letters (H-O-P-E)

  1. Sand down the scrap wood using the 220 grit sandpaper.
  2. Wipe down with a tack cloth.
  3. Paint the entire piece of scrap wood with the dark gray chalk paint.
  4. Let the paint fully dry.
  5. Next, using the white paint, go over the dark gray chalk paint.  You should cover the entire piece of scrap wood once again.
  6. Let the white chalk paint fully dry.
  7. Take the wooden letters and sand them down using the 220 grit sandpaper.
  8. Wipe clean with a tack cloth.
  9. Paint each letter completely white using the white chalk paint.
  10. Let the letters fully dry.
  11. Next, you will paint over the white with the light blue chalk paint.  Completely cover all of the white.
  12. Put the letters aside to dry.
  13. Next, take the painted scrap wood and using your 220 grit sandpaper, distress the paint.  The goal here is to sand away some of the white, so that the dark gray paint shows through.  This gives you that rustic, distressed feel to the wood.
  14. Once, you have distressed the paint to your liking, wipe clean with a tack cloth.
  15. Take a piece of your thin rope and measure how long you would like it to be.
  16. Using your staple gun, attach the rope to the scrap wood.
  17. Once, the letters have fully dried, take them and using your 220 grit sandpaper, distress them to your liking.
  18. Wipe clean with a tack cloth.
  19. Dry position the letters onto the scrap wood.
  20. Once, you have determined the position of the letters, then hot glue them into place.
  21. Let the hot glue dry.
  22. Spray down the final product with a clear matte finish.
