As a dog owner, I have had my fair share of encounters with skunks. I have dogs who charge full speed at skunks every time they see one. No matter how many times my dogs have been sprayed they continue to just go after them. “O look a Skunk?….CHAAAARGE!”
There is nothing worse than that rancid, eye watering smell. It stinks up your yard and your entire house. It often stays with your pet for days. As it so happens, this is what occurred a few years back with my dogs. One of my dogs got a direct hit spray right in the face. I swear this particular spray was extra stinky. I went down to the local Pet store and got a bottle of shampoo for just under 25.00 that guaranteed that it would remove the smell. Because my dog has thicker fur, I ended up using pretty much the entire bottle. Guess what? It did ABSOLUTELY nothing. It didn’t eliminate the stench at all. It just basically was like putting perfume over the smell. It just masked the smell. It did not eliminate it. So, against my better judgement, I had my husband go down and get another shampoo this time slightly cheaper at around 15.00 that also guaranteed it would destroy the smell. To my disappointment, the same thing occurred. It was more like these products were just covering the smell than actually eliminating the smell from my dog.
After this second shampoo, I was annoyed. So I resorted to the old hold remedy of tomato juice. Yes, I really tried it. I have to say it worked slightly but not totally. Not to mention my white dog was slightly dyed orange. Honestly, though at that moment if I had to turn my dog bright purple to get rid of the smell, then it was going to happen.
At this point, I was just in a bad mood. I was sick of washing my dog, I smelled like a wet, skunk dog. The smell was seeping further and further throughout the house. So what did I do. I called my MOM. Yes, I called my mom. After reverted back to that frustrated child, who was basically throwing a temper tantrum in frustration I called my mom and asked if she had any suggestions. Low and behold she did. She gave me the below recipe for a Homemade Skunk Wash.
- 1 Quart Hydrogen Peroxide
- 1/2 Cup Baking Soda
- 1 Teaspoon Liquid Soap ( I use your everyday Hand/Dish Soap)
All you need to do is mix it all together. Wash you dog really well. I mean get in there and scrub. Please do watch their eyes. Then Rinse really well.
Now, let me tell you. This stuff actually eliminates the smell. It does NOT just mask it. This stuff actual gets to the source of the smell breaks it down and rids it from your pet. I washed my dog twice. After, the second wash the smell was GONE! Immediately, after the first wash with this mixture, I could tell the smell had been drastically reduced. It was not like the Pet Store wash where you could still smell a strong odor mixed with a perfume. I could actually tell the odor had been eliminated drastically. After the second was it was gone.
The other major positive side to this is you can get all these ingredients for $5.00 or less and make multiple batches.
So, next time your pet gets attacked by Pepe Le Pew, try this out and save yourself the aggravation and money!
